Colorful Spelunking

Green Crotto Caves

These caves have had many names over the years - the Runaway Bay Caves, Hopewell Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Rum Caves and Dairy Caves before landing on it's most recent name, Green Grotto Cave .

This underground labyrinth have served as a safe haven for the Tainos before European influence, the Spaniards during the English siege, runaway slaves, smugglers running arms and rum storage during World War II.  The caves are also home to 9 of Jamaica's 21 bat species.

The Green Grotto Caves are located in St. Ann Parish in Brown Town on the North coast of the island.  The name references the green hue of the algae covered walls.  The grotto is filled with gorgeous formations of stalactites and stalagmites.    There is also a large fresh water lake with a depth of approximately 118 feet.

A Hike into the Mountains

An amazing view

There are many summits to explore in Jamaica's Blue Mountain Range like Blue Mountain Peak to John Crow Mountains to Catherine's Peak.  If you're lucky on a clear day you might get a glimpse of Cuba as a shadowy outline in the far distance.

These national parks, hiking trails and camp sites all offer breathtaking views and amazing sunrises and sunsets.

Let's take a dip

Milk River Bath

The discovery of Milk River bath and it's healing properties revolve around the story of a slave who is said to have escaped after receiving a severe beating on the orders of his owner Jonathan Ludford.  Days later this slave returned to the plantation healed and in good health.  In exchange for his freedom the slave revealed the location of the healing waters.  Ludford is said to have purchased the land the spring was located.  Following the death of Jonathan Ludford in 1794 the land was gifted to the Jamaican government.  The baths have been government owned and open to the public ever since.
